The "Noble Art" The "Sweet Science"
While ancient carvings and paintings from the Minoan’s and Egyptians portray duo’s in hand to hand combat, boxing is said to have been invented even earlier by the god Theseus himself.
But boxing more recognisably saw its origins as a spectator sport much later on in ancient Greek history, and was so popular it became an Olympic sport in 688BC, and the Romans would build huge amphitheatres to stage events.
Fighters would often wear leather gloved hands, sometimes with studs and weapons. And thus it survived as a bloody spectacle, normally in a contest to the death between slaves, until 39AD when it was abolished due to the excessive brutality.
The very term ring comes from the circular line marked on the floor of such events in which the combatants faced each other.
And while fist fighting remained throughout the world, it wasn’t until the early 1680’s that boxing became popular again, emerging as prizefighting in London.
Many deaths and injuries occurred in bouts with no referee, rounds or weight divisions and it wasn’t until 1743 that the champion fighter Jack Broughton drew up the 1st ever set of boxing rules.
These rules were revised and updated to the London Prize Fighter rules in 1838 and re written again by John Chambers in 1867 on behalf of John Douglas, the 9th Marquess of Queens-berry and remain pretty much the same today.
Boxing is a fine art.
The art of hitting without being hit; it’s the art of movement, coordination, footwork, timing, hand speed and technique.
